Escort Cosworth Hillclimb Car

History
The First Escort was bought in Sth Germany in 2004, a Small Turbo model, Ash Black, registered in Germany and used as a road car. The car was fitted with Radio, CD player and also had Air-Conditioning, the car had all carpets and security fitted and was 1300kg.

For safety a bolt in Cage had been installed. The car was entered in 5 Hillclimb events in 2004, in the Group G category for road registered cars.

Winter Work 04/05
The plan was to prepare the car for Gr F2005 for the 2005 season, so removed carpets and rear seats, reduced weight from 1300kg to 1200kg. New suspension was bought to help to improve handling but the springs were not the best choice as was found out at the first event.

July 2005. A new shell was found and work slowly began to get the car ready to race. This took longer than expected and the car was not finished before the end of the 2005 season...
This Escort shell is still the one we have today. We believe the car was first used as a circuit race car by Wolf racing in the early 90's, later sold and modified to rally in Germany and Czech Republik. The car has a 'Matter' weld-in roll cage, engine and Gearbox mounts are GpA and the car is painted Yellow. Unfortunately most of the GpA rally parts had been sold separately when the car was bought and so parts from the original Escort were fitted to the new shell. This meant the road suspension set up was used as well as the original engine and gearbox, the horsepower at the time was thought to be around 280ps. With so much work to do to the car it was not ready to race until the start of the 2006 season.

Winter work 05/06.
Most of the work done in Oct, Nov and Dec was with the electrics, the original loom was removed and a complete new loon and fusebox built, some parts of the loom were incorporated into the new loom. The dashboard was modified and a new Boost gauge fitted.

The rear door was modified, a fair amount of metal cut out and a Polycarbonate window installed, the weight was still 20kg, another job for later. The drivers and passenger’s doors were still almost original and weighed almost 54kg, again another job for later.

A new ProAlloy Intercooler and  Radiator inc fans were purchased and installed. To get the weight down even further, the original tank was removed and a 30Ltr ATL safety tank fitted.
The front brakes were increased to 330mm and rear brakes provided by M Rainbird were increased to 295mm.

A trip to Birmingham, England and a meeting with Baramotorsport sorted out the Front and rear diff and the Gearbox. The front diff was still 6 ½” but was plated, this improved the front drive out of corners. The rear diff was increased from 7” to 7 ½” was 240Nm and the ratio 4.444:1. The gearbox was still MT75, dogbox with synchro and 4.444:1 stepdown.

By now the car was down to 1135kg, a good improvement over the previous car but still too heavy for the class.
